Which List Building Strategy Really Works?

Now that the cat’s out of the bag, most people in the internet marketing business know that the dollar tree, the cash cow, the Asset, is the email list he/she possesses. What a highly responsive email list is to a marketer, is what the Office Suite is to Microsoft, or Adwords is to Google. You can depend on it to generate greenbacks for you.

So it’s no wonder that building a list is a priority for Internet Marketers. And it’s proliferating. When it comes down to it, there’s two ways to go about it: the Quick Way, or the Steady Way.

1. The Quick Way

The quick way is a clever way to get people’s attention. It gives you quick result, but it loses effectiveness quickly also. Easy come, easy go.

Software is one example. When you visit a web site, suddenly a pop-up message shows up. It gets your attention and tells you that you can get some free and very useful information by entering your email. This is done by a pop-up software.

There’s a Damnoen Saduak Floating Market near Bangkok, Thailand, where vendors sell their products on little boats that line the canal. Coconuts, durian, banana, pineapples, vegetables, hats, silk scarves, wood carvings, souvenirs, toys, fans, t-shirts. The sight and sounds and smells are magnets that attract tourists in droves.

So are the many ingenious ways of Internet Marketers. At some marketing forum you can find dozens of quick-result methods: free video tutorial, free pdf guide to opt in list building, tips, systems, secrets, maximizer, accelerator, courses, codes. Here’s an example: “417 email subscribers in 2 days! How I got them with only 15 minutes of work!” That’s a quick way.

I believe they all work — for the original creators. Those who follow and copy the system may not get as good a result. So for this to work, you’ll need to come up with your own unique way. That is to say, find a system that works, and add your own twist or secret sauce to it.

2. The Steady Way

The steady way is the tried-and-true method used by successful Internet Marketers. This method is basically 2 steps that are known to all. One, get traffic to the opt-in page. Two, convert the visitors to opt in.

The steady way takes time to achieve, because it’s the basics of mastering salesmanship. In the old days the apprentices worked and learned for years before they move on to become a guild member. Nowadays there are college degrees for business and marketing. It’s telling that business or salesmanship is not achieved in 2 days. Of course Internet Marketing is not nearly that long drawn out. We just need to focus on one thing.

It’s about focusing on the opt-in page.

A. How to get visitors to come and view your opt-in page.
B. How to write the sales copy in the opt-in page that motivate the viewers.
C. How to provide an incentive that draws the viewers to opt in.
D. How to write follow-up emails that will build a relationship to your subscribers.

That’s the nutshell of the Steady Way. If you like to read more, here’s a small report that provides a blueprint and examples: The Affiliate L.I.S.T. Strategy.

Which way is better, quick or steady? Which way should you take?

Answer: BOTH. Do the steady way for long-term result and the quick-way for short-term result. The order I choose is to do the steady way first. Finish it and forget about it. Let it produce result by itself. Then I do the quick way later. Since there are so many quick ways, I will pick and choose as I go along.

Ingredient of successful internet marketing – the Mindset

There’s a radio program called “Fresh Air” from WHYY that’s mighty entertaining. I love hearing surprising stories like insiders talking about Dung Beetles, Asperger’s Syndrome, and the near-collapse of the US economy. I don’t get to listen to Fresh Air everyday. But when I do there’s always something interesting going on, like the book review on a mystery trilogy by a Swedish writer Stieg Larsson.

Then one day I hear they have a Country Music Special. Each day for one week the hostess Terry Gross interviews a guest who’s a country music singer. I never know much about American Country Music before. Being born and raised in a far eastern Asian country, there’s not much connects me to that style of music.

But I listen to it and hear this song called “Saginaw, Michigan” sung by Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The melody and the guitar sound good. Couple of other songs by him also sound interesting. So I look it up and find that it is his album “Come On Back”. The library happens to have a copy of the CD.

I borrow a copy and put this album into the CD player and put on my headphones. The songs sound good, then they sound better, then I start to sing along and my head nodding and feet tapping. What’s going on? I never liked country music before!

It’s the mindset thing. The more you listen to something, the more it starts to make sense, or make music, as in the case of “Saginaw, Michigan” for me.

With Internet Marketing, like everything else, the success is strongly tied to the mindset. To succeed you need the mindset of success – believing you can do it and actually do it. Only problem is that the mindset is not so easily established. You may have it in your mind for a few days, and then it’s gone. It did not “set” in your mind.

So the trick is repetition. Listen to something again and again, till it’s not only sensible, but becomes second-nature to you. Then you’ve got a Mindset. This applies to anything, marketing action-plan or whatever. Have the strategy or tactics play out in your head over and over. You will have the mindset of success on that strategy.

So what I do is to use a MP3 player, download a few mp3 recordings of training material by gurus that I like, put them into the player and listen to them. These MP3 players are one of the great gifts modern technology has brought us. I see kids listen to their MP3 in many places. Their mindsets are probably whatever the pop music they are listening to.

Here’s one “Mindset” that may interest you. It’s called the $100-a-Day-Challenge, created by Jay Boyer who I met at the Practical Profits seminar in Las Vegas. He’s a real down-to-earth guy with solid products. This product contains a set of MP3 recordings of successful Internet Marketers talking about how to start from scratch, with nothing, to earning $100 a day in 30 days. Jay asked these gurus how they would do it if they were to start all over again from zilch and they answered. Now that’s something worth listening to repeatedly to build up your own mindset, isnt’ it?

How to boost your productivity on Internet Marketing

The last time I went over the 32 reports by Jason Fladlien there were 2 nuggets that jumped out at me bright and shiny.

One is Study-to-Action-Ratio, from the “Instant Action on Any Info Product” report. The other one is Is-Today-a-Success, from the “Peak Productivity” report.

Study-to-Action-Ratio (SAR)

A beginner comes across a product called “Twitter Traffic Tornado”. He buys it and downloads the videos training material into a folder somewhere in his computer. When he gets free a few days later he comes back looking for this folder where the videos are. He watches the first training video and surfs the Internet at the same time. By the time he starts to watch the seventh video he notices another new product launch from one of the email lists he subscribes to. This one is “Tornado Twitter Traffic”. He clicks over to the sales page and likes what he finds there… After a few moments of internal struggle, he clicks on the BUY button.

His SAR score is 5-0. He spends 5 hours studying, 0 hour taking action to implement what he learns, because he wants to learn more, from something else. The result is $0 return to his investment of time and money.

A mid-level marketer comes across a product called “Twitter Tornado Traffic” and buys it and downloads the training videos. When he gets around to watching the videos, he watches it first to get the idea. Then he watches it again. This time he follows the steps and do what the videos is showing as he watches it.

His SAR score is 2-1. He spends 4 hours studying and 2 hours taking action. His investment return is ${not enough data}.

An advanced marketer comes across a marketing strategy called “Traffic Tornado Twitter”. He studies the material and thinks about how he can incorporate it into his existing work. He puts it to action when he figures out the easiest way to so. Having done that, he does it again on a different product of his. By then he comes up with a twist to the new method, and he tries out the twist.

His SAR score is 1-6. Six hours of action for each hour of study. His investment return? Probably what’s shown in the PROOF section of the sales page of his product.

Isn’t that amazing? I would want my SAR to go from 0-6 to 2-1 to 1-2 and beyond, wouldn’t you?

Is-Today-a-Success? (ITS)

To make the long story short, a short-term goal works better than a long-term goal.

What is actually accomplished in one day counts more than what is planned to accomplish in two months.

At the beginning of the day, think of a few tasks you want to get done. By the end of the day, look to see if they are done. If they are done, then yes, today is a success. If they are not done, then today is not a success.

Your productivity will mushroom when you get more ITS yes. Is today a success? Yes. That’s how you will feel good and do better the next day. Start small, set simple easy tasks at the beginning.

I like this one a lot.

People read Internet Marketing Reviews to find a super-duper way to make money online. Among his 32 reports, Jason has 8 reports on MONEY-MAKING METHODS. One of these 8 reports jumps out at me. I like it as much as I like the Bourne Supremacy movie. It’s called 7 Dollar Fortune. Below is my low-fidelity reproduction of the report.

————————————————————
7 DOLLAR FORTUNE

Q: Can you make a fortune with $7 products?
A: Yes, if you follow the system here.

Q: Why $7? Won’t that take more work to make money than $97 products?
A: Not if you’ve seen the system explained in here.

Q: So what is your $7-product-fortune system?
A: It’s called One Problem, One Solution.

Q: Can you be more specific?
A: Yes. It goes like this: Find a hot topic, research to find a solution, write a 2-page step-by-step report of the solution. Sell this report for $7.

Q: That would only be $7. That’s far from a fortune.
A: Yes. $7 is not much. But you can sell lots of it by getting traffic. Because it’s a only short report so it can be done quickly. You create multiple such reports, each one selling $7. Do the math.

Q: Wait, you are talking about finding a hot topic, research, write a report, getting traffic. I do math. Doesn’t sound as easily or as quickly as you described.

A: But it is easy! Look,

Find a Hot Topic: Go to a forum of your niche, see what topic that has lots of people asking and discussing. That’s a hot topic. Here’s one example – how do you use the all-in-one-seo plugin to do Search-Engine-Optimization to your wordpress blog?

Research for Solution to the Topic: If you already know the solution, the research is minimal. If not, Google can take you to sources that have solutions. If you can’t find a solution through Google or library, move on to the next hot topic. Check out the forum’s questions. There’s no shortage of that.

Write a Report: With a solution in mind, explain it step by step. By breaking it down to step-by-step instructions, you may actually find it difficult to keep it down to less than 1200 words or 2 pages. In rare cases where you’re short, make it up by writing an alternative solution, again step-by-step.

Getting Traffic: Here’s one example. Find an affiliate who can drive traffic. Offer him or her 100% commission to sell your $7 report. The affiliate gets all the money but you get the buyers’ email addresses. Now you can drive traffic from this email list to your 2nd $7 report, and 3rd report… Oh, don’t just limit to one affiliate either.

Q: Alright, I get the idea. But how much money really can you make from this system?
A: That depends on how well you market the reports. But to put a hard number on it, say you sell 15 copies a month then it will be $105/mo. of income.

Q. I don’t call $105 a month a fortune, do you?
A. No. That’s from only one report. When you build up to 50 reports in a year, then it’s a respectable figure. You see the numbers? And there’s also other associate income from the back-end such as one-time-offer or upsell. There’s lots of ways to increase your profits from $7 reports. That’s the topic of another Jason’s report – 27 Tweaks.
———————————————————————-

We interrupt the $7-Fortune report to bring you this disclaimer: The above Q&A is fake. To get the real deal, read Jason’s original. Get it on the right sidebar.

Why I went to an Internet Marketing Seminar

Chances are, you are looking a practical way to make money online.

In early August I went to the Practical Profits seminar in Las Vegas with that in mind.

I’ve been on the email list of James Jones and Jason Fladlien for sometimes. I trust them a lot because of the quality content and products I’ve seen them put out time and time again. They are among the speakers in this 2-day Internet Marketing seminar.

They were calling 100 people to join them in this 2-day “all content, no pitch” internet marketing fest in the land of the high desert, teaching people how they make money and how to copy what they do. It sounded pretty irresistible to me.

I caught the make-money-online bug a couple of years back. After reading hundreds of articles and sale copies written by perfect strangers. I settled on niche marketing and started my adventure. Looking back, I remember studying many methods with great interest. Selling on Ebay, drop-shipping, BANS (build a niche store), Reviewazon. One thing led to another. Slowly and steadily I walked into the information overload trap.

People say that it’s important to hang out with successful people, to get mentoring and ideas rubbing off from them. I haven’t been to any Internet Marketing seminar before. Now was as good a time as ever. Network with people, get fresh ideas, I said to myself. Besides, I could use a break.

The last turning point for me was Brian Johnson’s Auto Content Cash (ACC) course. I was working on a BANS site. As soon as I learned about Brian Johnson, I altered what I did with BANS and moved over to ACC. I was making progress now. The problem was that I was too picky with “imperfections”. I revised my site content over and over, foolishly overlooking outsourcing and not knowing when to stop. I’m ashamed to say how long it took me to complete my sites.

So when the guru taught that don’t get hung up on trying to be perfect, just get something done quickly, they knew exactly what my problem was. And although now I knew what my problem was, I was still stuck. To change that habit was as easy as to change diet.

That’s one of the several reasons that I decided to go to the Practical Profits seminar. Brian already advised in his ACC course the importance of getting things done quickly. But I wasn’t able to kick my habits. Brian recommended the Micro Niche Finder for market research. I bought it and got hitched onto the wagon of James Jones. From there it’s Jason Fladlien, Tim Castleman… and leading up to the Practical Profits seminar.

I wanted to start getting quick results now, to break away from the perfection trap, to be satisfied with what’s done is better than none, to leave revision to future, to take stride in setting small goal and move on. Would being in the presence of these “wealth scientists” help me do that? I wouldn’t know unless I went to the seminar and meet them, would I? If nothing else, I’d get to ask them some burning questions in my mind: was email list building really the way to make big money? Should I stay on and keep pushing out more niche sites?

Day 1. The Rhodes Borthers, Rachel Rofe, and Tim Castleman

The day began. The conference was held in a 100+ people-conference room in a very nice hotel. And this was one of the smallest conference rooms there. People filed in and the room got full. Excitement began as we saw James Jones, Tim Castleman and others right in front of us.

Although I told myself not to expect much from this event, but still, I was half hoping to hear some secret internet marketing techniques that might just be the vehicle to royal success. I got my notebook out and pen ready. I put my Sansa Fuze on the table. This small mp3 player could record voice. Little computer chip inside can store hours of lecture and the battery lasts a long time. It’s perfect for this situation. I got it a couple of weeks before just for this seminar.

Brothers John and Matt Rhodes opened the set. They talked about Automatic Profit Machines with Blogs. Their calm and friendly manner impressed me right away. I didn’t go for hype much. A few years ago I remembered seeing a sales copy on the internet that claimed: How to make $10,000 a week with just 20 minutes of work! It showed a picture of a very handsome man and a moving account of how he worked so hard and got nowhere until he stumbled upon this internet marketing technique. Now he’s rolling in dough and he’s willing to share this anyone-can-do-it secret with me for $47, or maybe it was $27.

Why would anyone want to sell a secret like for $47? If had a secret like that I would certainly keep on making that $10,000 a week for myself and not tell anybody about it. I couldn’t see anybody would. Maybe the secret was that some people would believe him and pay him the money. And that’s how he made $10,000 a week. But I just didn’t buy it.

Here it’s totally different. I saw real marketers with real results. The speakers were entitled “wealth scientists” and it had a nice ring to it. John and Matt went over their blog money system one slide at a time. The market research, the proof of traffic and income, the blog content and link building, the call for taking action because it’s all simple steps. They themselves didn’t take on complicated projects. It was a lot of information in the short span of one and a half hours. And in John’s opening remark he already gave the advice that it’s best not to take on too much but to focus on just one goal, one simple plan that you could wrap your head around.

After the Rhodes brothers, Rachel Rofe talked about outsourcing. Not outsourcing was my Waterloo. I had personally experienced, multiple times, how a 5-minute task, guided by a Brian Johnson tutorial video no less, could take much longer. There’s a scientific reason for this. When I did this 5-minute job I might make a mistake somewhere. Now Brian, having done this before and had experience in how to fix an error, could easily rectify this and finish it on time. But I would be stuck. I’d be chasing after the problem, trying to investigate, to go to forum for help, to experiment with work-around. The result would be a reward of deep understanding, but at a cost of much time. You knew how while investigating on a problem you thought of something else and chased after that by goggling. Or you got tired and took a break. The next thing you knew two hours were gone and your work momentum had lost steam. So, that 5-minute job is a 5-minute job only after you have mastered it. For beginners it could be a 30-minute learning curve. James said outsource it, Tim said outsource it, Brian said outsource it, Rachel said she had an outsourcing system BURN YOUR TO DO LIST all setup to do the work for you. What else conclusion could I draw?

Lunch break came with a round of applause.

Next was Tim “I’m dead serious” Castleman. He’s so funny that I had a great time just listening to him. He said that he went from making $25K a year to $100K a year by implementing one thing: build an email list. I got one of my burning questions answered right there. Now Tim talked about making money with selling PLR and offline marketing, helping local business get new customers. But above and beyond his techniques, he said that Internet Marketing was a people business. People bought his products because they liked him, or liked what the product could do for them. How right he was! Tim had the magic of working the crowd, making them laugh, and at the same time see how good a value his product was. You couldn’t help but like him with the way he joked with Jason and the others. On the practical note, he was super smart in communicating the value of his product. Whether that communication skill came from him working hard at it for a long time, or just came naturally from his personality, I wouldn’t know. But he exemplified that it’s a people business, and you had to communicate effectively to succeed. In one of his presentation slides it listed: be entertaining, polarize people, lifestyle more than education.

The last program of day one was the Hot Seats.

I went up with a line of people to stand in front of the camera, facing the audience, and asked the speakers one question about my Internet Marketing problem. Las Vegas in August was 100-degree hot outside, air-conditioned cool inside. I probably looked calm outside, but inside I was super nervous. I can’t remember now what exactly my question was, or what their answers were. But it was great just to be in the hot seat and get through it. I felt so relaxed afterwards. The amazing part was that some people remembered me because I went up there. I met Ray this way, and Charles also. Ray saw me when the seminar was over and started talking to me, giving me lots of tips. I got his business card and contacted him by email. That was great.

Day 2, Practical Profits Intensified

The night before the 2nd day seminar several attendees talked together in the lounge of the hotel till almost daylight. Too bad I missed it. Next time I would surely watch out for networking opportunity like that.

The speakers on the 2nd day were Will Mattos, James Jones, and Jason Fladlien. I’ve bought products from James and Jason before and they were fabulously useful. Wil had a product that I’d been considering. It’s called Easy Script Redirect. It’s a software that managed and protected affiliate links. James was impressed with that product because he had lots of affiliate links.

Wil’s topic was “Making Money with Webinars“. This was amazing because he’s doing it as he Spoke. The Practical Profits seminar was being broadcasted around the world on the web via live streaming in real time. We attending the seminar of course paid for the admission. But there’s also a vast audience out there watching the live streaming. They paid for the viewing also. Then there’s the future DVDs. Wil was the tech wiz of the group, the Steve Wozniak of the Apple Computer company in its early days. He also excelled in doing business.

Wil went over the what, why, where, and how, of this business model, with analysis and case studies of the money he made. Everything was crystal clear and he made it sound easy. He stressed that YES, YOU Can Do This. There’s no more courses to buy. All the information needed to do webninars were in his slides.

I had not seen a presentation that surpassed Wil’s in terms of organization, completeness, and immediate practicality. If you asked me if it’s so good would I try to do a webinar soon myself? I would say I worry about my talking incoherently or sounding awful in a webinar. Here’s a worry I needed to overcome. Other than that, yes I would do it.

Next was James Jones, the man behind the many products that I bought and used: Micro Niche Finder , the Ultimate PLR Article Collection, and several webinar videos.

James’s topic was How To Create A Highly Responsive List.

He asked us what was the greatest invention on Earth? Then he opened an envelope and out came a hand-drawn calendar. That was the greatest invention on Earth to him: a calendar. On it was his company’s weekly promotion schedule. He made his fortune by promoting products to his highly responsive email list.

How much money was James making? Lots, I’d imagine. He’s probably one of the richest person in that room, if not the richest. He said he didn’t give discounts to his products. They were already the best value. But anyone with a product to promote and jv with him, he would discount the heck out of it for his responsive list. That’s smart sense from a rich email marketer.

So what did James do to create a highly responsive list?

It started with giving people a reason to want to be in your list, a free report or newsletter for instance. Or you could do a product offer at the Warrior forum. With an irresistible product offer, you’d get buyers to sign on to your list fast. Question was how to create a product if you didn’t already have one? I’m getting ahead of myself here. That’s the specialty of Jason Fladlien, the next speaker. Jason had so many quick, really quick, and simple ways to create info products. He’s a machine.

There’s a pre-requisite of running a list: an auto responder, such as AWeber or Profollow. James went over that. He continued on with how to grow you list the slow-steady way and the fast way, how to make it highly responsive, and how to do it creatively. He gave examples and reasons, tips and tricks, and shared information generously whenever questions were raised. He and the other “wealth scientists” did justice to the name “Practical Profits” seminar.

The grand finale: Jason Fladlien, on the topic of Viral Traffic Through Little Known Social Media.

Tim Castleman introduced Jason as the person who changed his life. Tim learned from Jason all the Internet Marketing techniques and turned around to begin making the kind of money he was making today. I could hardly believe it when he said that. Jason was a really young man! Younger than Tim was for sure. Tim sounded like a natural-born marketer and didn’t look like he was joking. But, well, that’s how it went.

Jason taught this: choose a hot topic (he showed how), write a report very quickly (he showed how), monetize the report (he showed how), make the report free and get traffic for it (he showed how). All along he stressed to do and complete it quickly, don’t think about it.

Here was his secret sauce to getting viral traffic for the report. It was making the report rebrandable, meaning the affiliate links in the report could be changed by the jv partners so they would profit by passing the report on to others.

My head was spinning as he talked. Jason talked fast, as Tim did. Their brains must be running at a faster pace than normal people. I kind of was hoping for a Brian Johnson pace. This was like watching a mad scientist operating in his basement, throwing a switch here, turning a knob there, and before I realized what was happening, the inert body of Frankenstein began to twitch and his eyes opened. Scream!

But he’s not done yet. He showed us a cash flow funnel that would capture the profits from the traffic. It’s a convoluted flowchart, a bit hard to fully comprehend quickly. I must study this more closely. Hmm, interesting, hmm, yes…

We had a group photo at the end of the seminar. We cheered! It seemed the seminar lasted a long time, and yet ended so quickly.

Next, part 4 of Practical Profits Seminar.

The Aftermath

How did I like the Practical Profits Seminar? Let me count the ways. First, Tim Castleman told lots of jokes. Second, there were free writing pads and pens for the taking. And third, not only did I hear these “wealth scientists” speakers talk about how to make money with internet marketing, I also saw them doing some of it.

A couple of days later, after returning home, the effect of the seminar began to gel for me. I felt a clear path was unfolding for my next step. The best thing about a seminar like this is that it can lead you to discover a practical quick action for yourself. Having a practical action plan gives you joy of heart.

I had a share of other entertainment also. Being in Las Vegas without going to the casinos would be like missing the bonus of a new product. So after the seminar was over I took a stroll in the lobby of the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. People walked in there like schools of fish. There’s one open restaurant where some leather-clad men and women danced on a high bar counter. One woman dancer was strikingly attractive. All around me the gamblers’ faces showed little except pure concentration. So fascinating to look at them.

What I learned from the seminar

1.	Take inventory of practical and simple methods. Evaluate which course of action makes the most sense to you. Or consult a guru or fellow internet marketer on what to do. Stop doing what doesn’t work. Keep it simple. Only one goal at a time. Then, ready, get set, GO.

2.	When taking an action, set a time limit for completion. If I can’t get it done in that time limit, I can’t evaluate the result. If I can’t evaluate the result, I don’t know if this action is right or wrong. My mind wanders off and gets distracted by other sound-so-good ideas. Result: information overload; spent too much money buying products and didn’t do half of what’s in them, and getting frustrated.

3.	Internet marketing is a people business. People want to do business with you because of how they feel about you. You want to be associated with quality product and services to earn people’s trust. So the actions are all about knowing what the customers want, and providing the solution to them. If they like what you do for them, profit will be easy.

4.	Here’s an example. Many people want to make money with internet marketing but can’t find a simple and effective way. Jason has a terrific solution and it’s called Making a Fortune with $7 Products. It’s explained in one of his 32 free reports. Free doesn’t always equal to useless. Air, for example. I will write a review of this report and post it in an upcoming blog . Stay tuned and please comment. P.S. Jason is doing what he teaches and he’s just got a new house and a new baby girl.
